Lamborghini hit by Toyota

In the morning, I picked my Lamborghini the bike from the parking space. I was talking with a neighbor of mine, while his wife drove backward her red Toyota. I thought she would stop, but no, the car hit my bicycle. I fell down, too. I was not injured but you can see the front wheel is destroyed. In the afternoon, an insurance company called me to talk about the accident.  I will take the bicycle to a bike shop, and the shop owner and the insurance company will talk. In the evening while I was still working, the man and his wife came to leave some sweets for me. … Continue reading

Business trip to Tokyo

From 10:30 AM, there was a meeting in Shibuya for the coming  governmental funds. I had been asked to join by the governmental office who gives money, so I went there. It was boring, but I found out one thing: the government is trying to focus more and more on the application studies than the fundamental researches. I do not like application researches. In my mind, there is a feeling that application is for money, which should be done by companies. I am a scholar, who seek for the truth. I know I need to carry out both fundamental and application researches to be funded, but I wish I could concentrate … Continue reading

Lazy Sunday on January 29, 2012

Katya, me, and Maya-san got up late this morning. I was working whole day, because of the business trip tomorrow. I need to finish some duties. In the evening, we went to Jonathan’s.      While we were having dinner outside, Maya-san enjoyed a one-dog party, which she had not been holding for a while. We scolded her as a rule as usual. She stayed alone for a while. Then we are having a lazy evening. Now Nadal and Djokovic in the Australian open. Katya likes Nadal and worries whether he wins. She checks the game once in a while on the internet. We are watching Takeshi’s Castle.

Earthquake, Dohshinboh by mini, Submission of a paper

At about 7:40 AM, there was an earthquake. Although it was a Saturday morning, Katya woke up. Maya-san kept sleeping. I soon understood that the earthquake itself might not be a big one because the frequency of the shake was high. Even though, the vibration was rather large, meaning that the location of the earthquake might be close to Kofu. The quake stopped, and restarted twice. Katya check the news by her iPad.; the epicenter was near Kofu, close to Mt. Fuji. The magnitude was 5.5, so it was not a big earthquake. Then I went to school to work. At 1 PM, Katya and I met at the parking … Continue reading

Preparing an important paper

I have been working on a scientific paper today. I obtained very important experimental results, and another professor simulated the results by computation. It has become a very beautiful paper. We decided to submit it to a famous, prestigious journal in that area. It is my first time to try the journal. Since the journal is of a high class, they (arrogantly) demand many details of the format. Therefore, I have been checking and modifying the paper. It is almost done. I will submit it tomorrow.

mini back

Following Smart, mini came back today. I waited for it for a long time. At 10:30 AM, I went to the parking lot, which is by the landlord’s house. I first visited the  landlord to pay my parking fee. She was worried about mini because it had not been there for a month. I told her that it would come back soon. She was happy about it and suggested me to change the parking place, with the same fee, which is less sunny and better. I thankfully accepted her offer. Soon after the chat, mini came back with the familiar sound. It was placed in the new section. It was … Continue reading

Graduation season

Students are getting ready for the graduation. A master degree student is busy with his thesis. He modified an apparatus himself for new experiments. He has gotten good results, which will be published in a paper. A bachelor course student is working hard for his last experiments. He is very smart. He has decided to go for his master’s and carry out experiments with me. I hope he will keep studying and try to accomplish his doctor’s, too. In the afternoon, juniors came to our institute to start carrying out their preliminary experiments. They will join the group from April. It is the time for the regeneration.

Paper to be revised

After the PhD defenses and the following party last evening, I received an e-mail this morning. I had submitted a paper to a scientific journal, one of the coworkers of which is the PhD student. Two reviewers gave us comments in the e-mail. One of them favored our paper very much, who accepted to publish it with no change or modification. The other reviewer was interested in the results, but he proposed a completely difficult interpretation. We know that he is mistaken, so we will slightly modify the manuscript and send them a letter telling our points.

Defenses

Today was for the defenses of PhD students. From 10:30 AM, I attended the defense of a student from Bangladesh. Boy, wasn’t he great! He came all the way to Japan to accomplish marvelous results. I heard that he will be working as a postdoc in Japan, which should be good for him as well as for Japan. From 5:10 PM, there was a defense of a student whose adviser is me. He carried out his presentation in Engish. He spoke in a very clear English, and his presentation was perfect, too. Two of the students surely will receive their PhD. There was five PhD  students in all in our institute … Continue reading

Quick visit to Tokyo

It had been rainy from last night in Kofu; the mountain should be heavily snowy. Katya and I decided not to go skiing, instead, we took a short visit to Tokyo. We took Azusa Super Express leaving at 7:24 AM, which was not filled with customers. The mountain was covered with snow. We took a short walk around Shinjuku, and went home. We had a walk with Maya-san.
