Hello world!

This is my first blog.

I am running a small apartment business in Tokyo and Yokohama.  I will start introducing Japan and the life there to you all.  I hope someday, I will be able to help you settle down in my country.

This is my dog, Maya-san.  She is from Vladivostok.  She is five years old and has been in Kofu, Japan, for three years with me and my wife, Katya.

    Hi mauhavej, hajimemashite!
Hope the business is going well (both the academic and apartment). Did you have a website specifically for your business (if you do, that would be good to link to your blog).

By the way, nice blog… love to see more photos of life there. Nice to get to see a different perspective on Japan. Do you live in Tokyo?

As someone who has a science background (but who been out of the game for some time), has a Japanese wife – but pretty poor Japanese language skills – I’m very interested in hearing your thoughts on the best options for people to get work over in Japan (in the academic world)… and how critical language is (and to what extent).

Alas I’m settled (career-wise) here in Adelaide, Australia… but looking to take the plunge and move over to Japan. Especially to Sapporo where my wife is from.

Welcome to my blog, AdelaideBen. You are the first guest!
I saw your blog. Beautiful pictures!!

My job is OK. As for my second business, I have not made a website yet. I am planning first to make one for my wife’s on translation and teaching.
I live in Kofu, Yamanashi. It takes one and a half hour by train to Tokyo.
It is rich in nature. Fruits are very delicious here. Maybe a bit boring sometimes.

You may be able to find a job as a postdoc in a university or a national research center. No need of Japanese. Because you are are out of science for a while, good recommendation letters may be needed.
If you would like a full professor position with tenure, Japanese is needed for teaching and especially for school administration.

Hokkaido is the place my wife wants to live in. She does not like hot summer and misses cold winter. It is good that there are many schools and universities in Sapporo.

If you want to know more, I will be happy to help you.

Thank you again for your visiting.

    Thanks for that…

Whilst I haven’t been, Kofu is supposed to be very nice. As for delicious fruits etc, I always get a great feed of very delicious food in Sapporo. Definitely recommend visiting.

Although the idea of tenure in a Japanese university sounds like a dream job, I am sure such positions would be difficult for foreigners, and indeed even a post-doc position would be hard being 10 years out of the publication circle (and having changed fields).

Still, I very much appreciate the offer.

    Regards
    Ben

    Ben,
Yes, you find very good food in Sapporo. I should take my wife once probably for skiing.

After being out of science for 10 years, finding a position might not be easy. Please ask me whenever you need.
