One of my colleagues is from Fukui prefecture. As was the case last year, his parents sent him Echizen crabs to share with the lab members. I got two and took them home. Echizen crabs are rather small but well known for their taste. Katya was teaching English and arrived home later that I. Although I had put them in the refrigerator, Katya instantly noticed the smell. Yes, the smell of the crabs was very strong. We will have them tomorrow.
One of the researchers I saw in Poitiers, France, came to the conference in Niigata. He worked in our institute for one year, so I know him very well. We had a good dinner with the Mexican professor in Niigata. Today, he came to our institute to say hello to his old colleagues and students. So within two weeks, we met each other in Poitiers, Niigata, and Kofu. At 2 PM, he left for Narita Airport by bus. We will see each other somewhere on the earth again.
The hotel breakfast was a buffet. As I expected, rice was very good; best rice and sake are produced in Niigata. They cooked omelettes at the restaurant, too. The breakfast made a good start of the day. In the morning, a colleague/coworker of mine made a good talk. In the evening, a student of me made a poster presentation, which was also good. For dinner, all the institute members participating in the conference, approximately 20 people, went out together to a restaurant. Foods in Niigata are very good. Tomorrow, I need to work on the budget of my fund, so I will drive back in the morning, although the … Continue reading
In the morning, I had the last breakfast in the hotel. I packed up everything and left the hotel. I took the same bus to the university. T This morning, there was a final defense of a PhD student. I joined it and listen to him. Very intelligent he was! At the end of the last two visits to Poitiers, I took early trains to Paris to enjoy a walk. This time, because of this defense, I decided to stay in Poitiers in the morning. The questions and answers started and continued. I sneaked out from the auditorium at 11:30 AM. A French colleague took me to the station. … Continue reading
The room was a simple one with two bed. I stayed with a colleague. In the evening, we had a time for excursion/recreation. I took a nap and walked around. The hotel has a golf course and ski slopes. I found a chapel. I went in an outside hot-spring spa. At 6 PM, we took a bus to Takizawa Farm. We had an indoor BBQ. I chaired the ceremony for the poster awards. Some participants had some more drinks from 9 PM till midnight in a room.
From the end of August to the early September, I will chair a scientific seminar in Nagano. Many Asian researchers decided to come, fewer Americans and Europeans. Japanese researchers and students are much fewer than last year, partly because of the earthquake. My colleagues and I called and sent e-mails, and today the number of the participant from the outside of our university raised up to 43. I hope there will be more than 50 people. It was less hot today. I have been doing without an air conditioner in my office this summer. I think I am getting used to it.
