Experiments continued
From the early morning, I have been carrying out experiments with a student of mine and a researcher from Panasonic. By our side, a professor from Keio University was doing his with my colleague. When I had time, I was writing a paper, too. Students came to me once in a while to ask me how to submit their abstracts and register themselves with the conference (actually, the registration procedure was very complicated). I got so tired after these three day. When I came home, Katya started talking with her parents on Skype. Mariya was on a new foam-plastic matress we bought at Babies “R” Us in Odaiba. Katya … Continue reading

Working with Shimadzu and Panasonic
From yesterday, I have been working with Shimadzu and Panasonic researchers in my lab. Pretty tiring because I have little time to rest. Shimadzu researchers left this evening, but Panasonic researchers stay until tomorrow. Tomorrow, a professor from Keio University arrives to carry out another experiments. I was pretty exhausted when I arrived home. Katya made a lot of spaghetti, and I finished it all.

New instrument is coming
I have been interested in a Russian instrument for my new experiments. Luckily, we got a budget for an instrument with the same function. The exact company has not been decided; a couple of them are expected to give us presentations of their own. The Russian instrument has a probability, too, because the instrument possesses many unique experimental modes. Two professors and I checked a room for the installation. The room was OK for the expected experiments. The choice of the company (and the precise instrument) should be made in June. Tomorrow, I will explain the specifications for the instrument.

Two business meetings in Tokyo
I left my apartment at 4 AM for my office in the institute. I checked my e-mails, finished working with some documents, and went to Kofu station by bike for two meetings scheduled to be held in Tokyo. Since Marunouchi line in Tokyo was not running till 9 AM, because of an electricity break down, I arrived at the first place in Shinjuku 20 minutes late. There, I carried out some experiments using the Russian instrument I am interested in. I explained the information I needed to Russian and Japanese operators of the instrument. Then they started the experiments. I was there with them and left the building at 2 AM. … Continue reading

Business trip to Kyoto, March 4, 2012
It is Sunday today. I am planning to carry out experiments in Kyoto with three students for two days from tomorrow. I first took a bullet train to Kyoto Station. I changed the JR line to the Kintetsu Kyoto Line. I got off at Shin-Hosono Station, where I took a bus to Keihanna Plaza Hotel. I was hungry and took a bowl of boeuf bourgignon. The room was small with one bed, but comfortable enough. I will take a rest and will start working from tomorrow morning.

Graduation season
Students are getting ready for the graduation. A master degree student is busy with his thesis. He modified an apparatus himself for new experiments. He has gotten good results, which will be published in a paper. A bachelor course student is working hard for his last experiments. He is very smart. He has decided to go for his master’s and carry out experiments with me. I hope he will keep studying and try to accomplish his doctor’s, too. In the afternoon, juniors came to our institute to start carrying out their preliminary experiments. They will join the group from April. It is the time for the regeneration.

Business Trip to Kyoto – 2nd day –
Today, I left the hotel to Yoshida Campus of Kyoto University. It is one of the best universities in Japan. Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology has constructed a research network, and Kyoto University has been equipped with various instruments to be used by universities and companies. A researcher and I checked the possibility of coming to Kyoto for experiments. Unfortunately, the apparatuses they have might not be adequate for our research. I took a bullet train from Kyoto to Nagoya. In Nagoya, I changed trains to Shiojiri, and from Shirojiri, to Kofu. It took nearly five hours. On the way from Kofu station to our apartment, Katya, … Continue reading

Future business trips and evening tennis
It was decided that on June 20 and 21, I will go to Kyoto on a business trip. From September 5 to 10, I will go to Poitiers, France, in order to take two students to the university there. They will carry out experiments and will come back on June 30th. On September 9, I hope to stay in Paris for half a day, but it could be difficult. Poitiers is a beautiful place, but I prefer Paris. I love simply sitting on a street in front of a cafe and reading a news paper normally International Herald Tribune. This evening, we joined the tennis class. Katya was working late … Continue reading

School year is ending
School year ends in March in Japan. We are getting ready for sending students out from academia. My PhD student did OK. He finished with his thesis. He is still carrying out his experiments for his last paper. Katya and I will hold a farewell party for him. Master students and senior students do their graduation presentations, too, and we will help them. I am organizing a meeting in a conference with six Chinese and six Japanese. One Japanese participant has not been decided and I have been sending e-mails and calling one by one. My ex-boss got a big prize in another scientific society, and I will try to … Continue reading
