From Izu to Shimosuwa to Kofu
Today is Respect-for-the Aged Day, a holiday. We checked out and left the hotel after 10 AM. We headed for Gotemba Premium Outlets for shopping. On Hakone Pass on the way to the shopping center, there was a fog. Katya sees better than I, so we changed drivers and Katya started driving. We arrived at the outlet mall safely. After we finished shopping, a rain started, so we had snacks at Fauchon’s. Breads are very good there. After we had sandwiches and drinks, it stopped raining. A bus took us to the parking lot from the mall. From the parking lot, we drove back to Shimosuwa to say a … Continue reading

Cacti and Beach in Izu
We had breakfast in the hotel and headed for Izu Shaboten Park (Izu Cactus Park). It is a park combining a cactus garden and a zoo. Katya grows cacti and wanted to go there, but I was not expecting very much. Katya was right. It is a cactus park with a history of 50 years, and cacti from all over the world were collected. Big and different. Funny thing was a place for “Cactus Hunting”. Cacti were planted in the field, and the visitors pick whatever they want to buy them. After visiting the park, we drove all the way down to Yumigahama Beach in Shimoda city. Surfers … Continue reading

Izu trip decided
I am preparing an Izu trip from 15th to 17th this month. I have already reserved a room in a hotel in Ito on the 15th, and was waiting for a cancellation at a hotel in Hatsushima island on the 16th. Today, I called to the reservation center and found out 30 people in the list still waiting. So I gave up. I made another one-night reservation in a hotel in Ito, so we will stay in Ito for two nights. It might be not bad to be relaxed in the same hotel.
Business trip to Chiba
I left Kofu at 1 PM and arrived at Hotel Springs Makuhari in Chiba. There was a two-hour workshop in the hotel for the present energy situation. A Nobel prize laureate, Koichi Tanaka, gave a short talk, too. The workshop gave a perspective of the renewable energynow. It was difficult to make a reservation in Makuhari because of JASIS in Makuhari Messe, which I am attending tomorrow. Therefore, I took trains to Chiba station. It started raining. I took a light dinner and walked to Chiba Washington Hotel. It was a small hotel. The room I stayed in was small, too. It is OK, because it cost only 4500 yen including breakfast. … Continue reading
Run for Upgrade!
I woke up 4:30 AM. The bus to Incheon International Airport left the hotel at 5:30 AM. I arrived at the airport at 6:40 AM. I checked in using an automated check-in machine, then I went to Seven-Eleven on the first floor to buy candies to the office workers and my students of the institute. I went through the immigration, and then looked around shops in the airpot to look for souvenirs for Katya. Before the departure, I spent my time in a Sky Team lounge, taking a light breakfast. Then I got on a Delta plane for Honolulu bound for Narita. I took a seat, half asleep. A male … Continue reading

First day of the conference in Seoul
It was cloudy in the morning. I did not get a good view from the window. River was hardly seen. The conference was held at COEX conference center next to Intercontinental COEX. There was a poster session in the morning. I was asked to evaluate 23 posters in one hour. Hard work! I did my best. After lunch, I went back to my hotel room. The view got better. Then I joined the conference again. Katya wrote me not to eat too much. So I had snacks in the lounge of the hotel. Now I am preparing my presentation tomorrow.

Upgraded Me
In the morning, I was working in my office for the invited talk in a conference held in Seoul from August 16 to 18 At 2:30 PM, I said good bye to Katya and Maya-san, leaving for Narita Airport. I arrived at the airport at 5:30 PM. I was then working in the lounge. When I was about to be on board, I handed my boarding pass to a man. The man scanned it on a machine, and a red light on the machine lit. Did I do something wrong? “Thank you for flying Delta. You are upgraded to the Business Class”. This happened to me for the first time. … Continue reading

Dinner with Chinese student
The Chinese student is leaving Japan on August 10. He will then go back to China for the summer vacation to see his parents. Today, I invited the Chinese student, the student who instructed him, and a research associate to a dinner. I chose Ohajiki, a chicken-specialized restaurant, because it is one of the best chicken restaurants in Kofu and that the student is a Chinese Muslim. It is decorated in an old Japanese style. Beans and Tofu appetizers. I ordered a bottler of Kofu wine, which was good. Then chickens continued. Very delicate tastes. Dessert was an icecream. We left the restaurant at 9:30 PM. … Continue reading

Back from Toba on Monday, July 16, 2012
Today is Marine Day, a national holiday. I took a double espresso before a long drive, while Katya was busy packing. It was more than a double, which woke me up. Yes, it was a nice stay in Toba. Katya and I checked out the hotel at 10:30 AM. I drove and only stopped twice. We arrive at my parents’ at 3:50 PM. Maya-san was thrilled to see us! After we took a rest, Mom prepare a meal. We had it and left for Kofu with Maya-san. Katya drove this time. We arrived home at 6:30 PM. It was a long journey back home. We all are tired as well … Continue reading
Back to Kofu from Hachioji
I woke up to see outside from the hotel, which was not very beautiful. I took a light breakfast and left the hotel in Hachioji. I took an express train to Kofu. After arriving at the apartment, I went out to see the Chinese student from France at the dorm. He was OK. It seems that the jet lag does not affect him very much. He gave me souvenirs. I will see him on Monday. Then I was working in my office.
