Last day in Nagoya

“Hotel Trusty Nagoya” promotes an environmental preservation.  If the guest agrees to use the same towels, for example, they give him/her discounts. I used the same toothbrush, comb, towels, and razor to earn 1,000-yen ticket. I upgraded my breakfast and ordered a glass of orange juice using the ticket. Today was the last day of the conference held in WINC AICHI. Three students and one professor talked today. I was in a different hall and did not listen to them. Professors say they did well. I left Nagoya at 4 PM. I arrived in Kofu a quarter to eight.  Katya picked me up at the station with Maya-san.  Katya said … Continue reading

Korean dinner and photos of casino

For dinner, our group took another street to a Korean BBQ restaurant.  This street was not so quiet. We arrived at the Korean restaurant after 10-min walk.  The place is run by Korean people, and customers were mainly Koreans, too.  Tables were taken, and we had to wait for 20 min.  I bought T-shirts for Katya then. We had Korean beers.  It was a good meal.  Four teachers invited three students, who are going to make an oral presentation in this conference. The hotel during the night time looks just like the one in the 60s. Far from the tables, I took pictures inside the casino. People at the tables … Continue reading

This hotel is not bad. It is good.

When you think of Las Vegas, it is this. The Riviera hotel I am staying at might be a historical hotel, but it is old. Casinos are quiet. I do not like the streets around. But when I went to see the casino after dinner (you have to walk through it to the room), oh, I felt very good. The light is warm, the sounds are not loud, and old people are pleasantly enjoying games, not to be a millionaire.  I did not take photos inside of the casino because of my cowardice. Instead, I show you pictures taken in halls. Weddings are everyday.  It is a joy to see … Continue reading

Meeting friends

Yes, I was gloomy in Las Vegas. This evening, there was a get-together and I met two of my old friends, one American, the other Chinese, whom I worked with in Illinois on my sabbatical.  Gee, now I thank the opportunity of coming to Las Vegas.  Meeting friends is irreplaceable. I feel active now.  Maybe I will go see a show to let you know about it (I cannot guarantee, though).

2nd day in Las Vegas

I got up noon.  I still feel dizzy because of the jet lag. The view from the window of the room is not very pleasant. I took lunch in an Asian restaurant in Riviera.  The food was not good for the price.  For me, Las Vegas was a place for good foods at decent prices, so it was a slight disappointment. In the afternoon, I went out for a walk. I do not like the environment around the hotel very much. not because it is crazy (I wish it were) but because the place is so quite and deserted.  Very few people are seen on the street. I needed a … Continue reading

Arrival in Las Vegas

After I posted my last article, I first flew to LA. In the airplane, I concentrated on using English to change my brain to an English mode; conferences in the US is a good chance to bring my English back. I watched Karate Kid and Kick-Ass.  Jaden Smith is a very good actor.  It was a joy to watch his skills being improved.  Jakie Chan played a good master, too.  Kick-Ass is a combination of Spiderman, Batman, and Kill Bill.  The Parker guy played well, but the best was Hit-Girl. I was reading a book, “Angela’s Ashes“, too. We arrived in LA in the morning only for a transit.  We … Continue reading

Narita Airport

Katya was angry with me yesterday, because I was thinking of leaving on Sunday, but yesterday afternoon, I found out that it was TODAY, SATURDAY.  Katya set up schedules on Saturday, and all had gone. I felt sorry. I helped her set up her new computer, so I did something. I took trains from Kofu to Narita airport. Now it is 2:15 PM.  I am in a lounge waiting for the plain leaving at 3:50 PM to LA. Bon voyage to me.  See you in Vegas.

Computers

I used to be a Mac user; I owned 512, Plus, SE30, II upgraded to IIfx, Portable, and PB100.  When I left Sendai to Kofu, I threw them away.  I regret it. Followings are the ones I have in our apartment now. This sony still works.  Katya sometimes uses to talk to Russia on Skype. I brought a Mac and an HP to Illinois in 2005. The HP still is the main machine at home till today, but its microphone has been broken. I bought this second-hand Toshiba for my real estate job. This is for my school job.  I will bring it to Las Vegas. Tomorrow, we are expecting … Continue reading

Katya and Muravej help students

I was helping a student last night. I returned home at 1:30 PM. Three students are going with me to Las Vegas.  I am daily instructing two of them. Japanese do not speak English.  Logically, neither do my students.  They are good researchers, by the way. Correcting manuscript is my work.  Katya helps them learn to speak English once a week. In spite of our efforts, presentation in English might be a bit beyond their present ability.  So I write their speech notes, and help making  their PowerPoint files.  I hope they will make good talks in Las Vegas.

Muravej goes to LAS

This coming Sunday, I leave for Las Vegas with three students for a conference.  They are not very good at English, and I am helping them.  It is 10:30 PM and I am home.  I finished correcting a speech manuscript of one of them after dinner. I have sent it to him. He will prepare his presentation with figures, and we will check it together at the lab.  So I am expecting myself to come back again after midnight. Good night everyone.
