Paper to be revised

After the PhD defenses and the following party last evening, I received an e-mail this morning. I had submitted a paper to a scientific journal, one of the coworkers of which is the PhD student. Two reviewers gave us comments in the e-mail. One of them favored our paper very much, who accepted to publish it with no change or modification. The other reviewer was interested in the results, but he proposed a completely difficult interpretation. We know that he is mistaken, so we will slightly modify the manuscript and send them a letter telling our points.

Students’ theses

It was a snowy day today. Katya and I might go skiing this weekend. Two of my students are busy preparing for the graduation. A PhD student is getting ready for the final defense of Monday. It will be in English. He wrote papers in English and attended international conferences. He is a smart guy, so he should be OK. A master degree student is less experienced. I have been reading his thesis all day. He wrote a lot (in Japanese), but with less care and consideration. It was not enjoyable hours to correct his manuscript. Anyway, I will hold a party for students including the two. I will be … Continue reading

Students return to school

It was a cold, windy day again. Students are back to school after the winter holidays.  At 9 AM, everyone got together in a hall to listen to the director’s new-year speech. Then we went back to our works.  I was in my office doing my job. In the evening, professors had a small New Year party. Katya started to work, too. She said that without speaking English for two weeks, students forgot lot of words and phrases. We were about to take Maya-san out for a walk. Maya-san ignored us sitting on the sofa, knowing that it was very cold outside. We put a sweater on reluctant Maya-san. While … Continue reading

Katya finished this year’s classes

There was a small party in one of Katya’s English schools. Katya’s work is over this year. She is very happy about it. Tomorrow is Emperor’s birthday. Although I am against Emperor System in Japan, I think I will take a rest and play tennis with Katya. People are trying to finish all works within this year to enjoy holidays coming soon; I had three meetings today with professors and researchers from companies. I will be working till December 28th.

Year-End Party, 2011

As in the last year, all the people of our institute joined the “End-of-the-Year Party”. Last year, there were 90 people. This year, 100. Our institute is growing. The party was held at the same place.  It started at 6:30 PM. The foods might be not as good?       We had fun anyway, talking and drinking. On the way back home. I bought some cake to Katya.

Parents’ 77-year old anniversary and Golden wedding

We had not celebrated my parents’ 77-year old anniversary (birthdays, yes, but not as a special ceremony); “77 years old” is considered as an age representing happiness in Japan. Kids decided to celebrate their Golden marriage together with their 77-year old anniversary (Mom and Dad are at the same age). I have a sister and a brother, who have their own families and live in different places. All of us got together at our parents’ today. Katya drove up on Chuo High Way. Yatsugatake mountains looked beautiful. Katya, Maya-san, and I arrived 5 minutes before noon. My sister’s and brother’s families had already arrived and were helping with the party. … Continue reading

A party with a German professor

A German professor came to talk in our institute this morning. We have not seen each other for some 10 years. I was asked to join the dinner by the professor who invited him. The party started at 6:30 PM at Sadoya. They decorated the restaurant for Christmas. We had a French dinner.         Three out of five Japanese professors joining the party have lived in Germany for a couple of years. They like Germany and talked a lot. Although I am a France-lover, it was fun to listen to them. The German professor will be leaving for Tokyo tomorrow. He will stay there for one week and … Continue reading

Welcome-and-End-of-Year Party

Our research group, about 20 people in all, had an End-of-Year Party. We recently had a new student, so the party was combined with his welcome party. We had the party at Wan.  Interior is set in a classical Japanese way.    Hot pot is something we cannot miss in winter.      It was a Kyushu-style motsunabe. Director was absent in Cancun, which meant Fun!

Lonely tennis

Katya and I restarted tennis in a tennis class in November. We normally go on Tuesdays. The Tuesday class could be the most basic one, and it is good for us to practice fundamental skills again. Last Tuesday, I went to a party and Katya alone went to the class. Today, Friday, I joined the class alone. Katya took me to the court with Smart. She had bought me a new pair of tennis shoes because my nails were damaged by running in my old shoes. It was the day of the first trial of the shoes. Although it is in the mid November, the temperature was suitable for playing … Continue reading

kick-off meeting for the project successfully ended

In the morning, I was preparing for the kick-off meeting. The meeting started at 1:30 PM.  Three governmental bureaucrats arrived.  In all, there were 26 people. I was chairing the meeting. I gave a talk about the general purpose of the project and the research plans. I also gave a small talk about what to do in our institute under my supervision. The meeting ended at 5 PM. Then I gave a tour of the institute. The three bureaucrats went back to Tokyo by taxi. I think the meeting was successful, but I do not know how they felt because they are bureaucrats. Rest of the members moved to Sadoya … Continue reading
