ReRehearsal for the conference presentation

After the meeting from 9 to 11 AM, I started working with my duties. From 3:30 to 7:30 PM, there was a rehearsal again of the four students who are presenting  at a conference starting in a few days. Gee, I am joining the conference, too, and before the conference, I need to finish a lot of works, but I did not have enough time to work today. I will work hard tomorrow.

Preparation for the conference meeting

The conference meeting awaits us at the end of March in Shizuoka prefecture. From this morning on Saturday, eight students made the rehearsals.  It took eight hours in all. We, the teachers, got tired. Six of them will make rerehearsals. Katya tried “Barista” today. The taste was not as rich as a real coffee maker, but it works.

I just kept working

I stayed in my office. I slept a bit with my head on the desk. I am working on the schedules of my project for the academic/fiscal year 2012 starting from April.  The deadline has passed. In the morning, I received an e-mail telling me to finish them as soon as possible. So I kept working. A bachelor student I am instructing carried out his rehearsal for the graduation presentation right after lunch. The presentation was not very bad, but it needed to be modified. While I was working, the student came in to my office for the discussion.  We talked a lot about how to understand his data. We … Continue reading

Rehearsal for seven students

From 9 AM, rehearsals started for seven students who are graduating with master’s degrees. Each one talked for 20 min in front of nearly 10 professors of our institute followed by questions and answers for about an hour. It was a rehearsal for the final presentation scheduled on Monday and Tuesday next week. My student did well, but he was asked to change some slides, too. After the rehearsals, I checked e-mails and arrived home at 9 PM. I called to my parents in Atami. I am glad to find that they were having fun. Mom told me that it is a cold winter even in Atami this year, and … Continue reading

School Year is Ending

In the morning, we continued the rehearsals. At 1 PM, the American professor gave us a one-and-a-half-hour talk.  From 3 PM, we had interviews for high school students who are applying to our university. From 6 PM, five professors of ours, including me, and the American professor had dinner in a Japanese restaurant. At 8 PM, I came back home and ordered a pizza. At 9:20 PM, Katya came back from her work. We had pizza together.

Dinner with Illinois Professor

There were another rehearsals for the graduation presentation of 12 senior students.  Presentation is 7 min for each, but we were with them from 8:30 to 17:30.  We will carry out the second turn of rehearsals tomorrow. In the evening, I went to Kofu station to pick up a professor from Illinois, USA, in whose laboratory, I passed my sabbatical for one year.  I see him once in a while at conferences. I took him to Konaya Hotel near Kofu station. We had dinner in a Chinese restaurant in the hotel over a bottle of Yamanashi wine.  We talked a lot. He will give us a lecture tomorrow.

Lazy Saturday

Katya likes animals.  She loves “Great Migrations” on National Geographic Channel.  We searched for the DVDs to find out they can be watched only in Region 1, whereas Japan is in Region 2. This morning, she woke up to watch the program starting at 7 AM.  I am not an animal fan, so I was in futon. I later woke up, had two slices of bread, and went to school for the rehearsal for one student.  On the way to school, it was slightly snowing. The student did OK.  We gave him some advice for his presentation on Tuesday. From the garden of my office, mountains were seen covered with … Continue reading

Students are graduating

Today, at 9 AM, all professors of the institute got together in a room for the rehearsals for the graduating eight master students of their oral presentation scheduled next Tuesday.  They gave 20-minute talks and 40-minute questions/answers.  Everybody did good except one, for whom, we will have another rehearsal on Saturday morning. The rehearsals ended at 6:30 PM.  I did not go home for lunch, because I was too busy for the students. In March, the last month of the educational year, we are going to have a couple of farewell parties.  Graduation is waiting, too. After coming home, Katya prepared a fish dinner for me. Tomorrow is National Foundation … Continue reading

Helping Student’s Presentation

Today’s Saturday.  Katya went to see her friend in Minami Alps city, while I worked. I the morning, I felt I had a cold. At 5 PM, I was finishing my work, when a Ph. D. student came to my office with a confused look.  He is to take the oral Ph. D. dissertation on Monday, but he was not confident. So, we went to a hall for a rehearsal.  We commented on some points.  It finished after 7 PM. I was planning to cook chili this evening but had no time now.  Katya waited for me at Gusto and I joined her. I think he will be OK on … Continue reading
