It is getting cooler

The highest temperature in Kofu was 24 degree C, whereas the lowest, 10 degree C. It is getting much cooler these days. People tend to be out of condition when the season changes. This afternoon, one of my students felt sick and was taken to the hospital. I was with him. He seems to be OK, but his mother took him home.

The last evening in the hospital

I arrived at the hospital 6 PM. Mariya was sleeping. When I see her, Mariya is always calm, but Katya told me Mariya cries a lot during the night time. I had dinner together with Katya, and went home. They will be leaving tomorrow. A PhD student of mine was waiting for me in the institute, and I discussed with him until midnight.

Third day in Honolulu: my presentation

During the night, I prepared my presentation slides. I changed the story from what I had been thinking, so it took time. I finished the first version of my presentation at 10 AM. Then I went to Hawaii Convention Center to listen to my colleague, who was invited. Then I came back to my room, which was already cleaned. I kept working, upgrading the slides. I went to the meeting  room in Hilton at 4 PM. It was a small room with 30 – 40 participants. My presentation started at 5 PM. I am new in this field, and I first talked about the background of my research carefully. Then, … Continue reading

New Russian Instrument and Jingisukan BBQ Party

Technicians have been working on the installation of a new instrument for four days. It has finally been settled down. It is an instrument imported from Russia. I first knew the instrument in September 2010, and it finally arrived. The machine has a very unique function, and I hope it can be useful for our researches. In the evening, there was a Jingisukan BBQ party held by students in the garden of the institute. About 15 participants. It was a pity that the ex-student of mine, who sent us the meat, was busy and was not able to show himself. Anyway, we thankfully enjoy the meat.

Working in a laboratory in Keihanna

From the window of the room in Keihanna Plaza Hotel, only a parking lot was seen. I had breakfast on the first floor.  Then I left the hotel.    I walked to Shimadzu laboratory. Keihanna is a new city from the late 20th, so the streets were new, too.    In the laboratory, the student and I worked all day. After coming back to the hotel, I bought a dinner for the student in a French restaurant “la Saine” on the second floor. The dishes were not expensive, but the tastes were real.

Staying up late for an abstract

It is always busy after trips. At the institute, I found out that there is some modification needed in the instrument we are developing under the governmental project. So I decided to go to Shimadzu in Kyoto for two days with a student of mine. I need to finish an abstract for a presentation in November, so I will stay up late tonight to finish it.

Project meeting held in Tokyo

I woke up at 5 AM and went to my office to prepare the slides of my presentation today for a  project meeting scheduled this afternoon in Tokyo with most of the collaborating researchers of several schools and companies. I am the leader, so I have to talk nicely. I finished the slides at 7:30 AM, and made 30 prints. I went back to my apartment, took a shower, shaved myself, and put skin cream and cologne, which is unusual (shaving, especially), to fire up myself. Katya left home for her teaching job first, and I left next for the station. Maya-san kept the apartment. I took a train leaving … Continue reading

Run for Upgrade!

I woke up 4:30 AM. The bus to Incheon International Airport left the hotel at 5:30 AM. I arrived at the airport at 6:40 AM. I checked in using an automated check-in machine, then I went to Seven-Eleven on the first floor to buy candies to the office workers and my students of the institute. I went through the immigration, and then looked around shops in the airpot to look for souvenirs for Katya. Before the departure, I spent my time in a Sky Team lounge, taking a light breakfast. Then I got on a Delta plane for Honolulu bound for Narita. I took a seat, half asleep. A male … Continue reading

Monday in Summer Vacation

It is Monday today. There is no meeting at all; I checked e-mails, wrote syllabi for the lectures, and sent on the web the scores of the students taking my classes. I went to see a nose doctor, and had my hair cut at a barber’s. In the evening, Katya and I talked on skype. Katya said that her parents gave many souvenirs to Japan. She will be coming back to Japan tomorrow from Vladivostok.
