Katya’s Birthday, August 21, 2012
After we got up, I gave Katya a small present for her birthday. I bought it in Korea and kept it. Then I took Maya-san for a morning walk (as a tiny extra birthday present), and left home. In the late afternoon, Katya came by Smart and we went together to Red Lobster. I had reserved seats for us. There were some customers even on a weekday. We are glad because we have been worried about the withdrawal of Red Lobster from Kofu. We found that it is “Crab day” today on Tuesday, when we get some discounts. We ordered a lobster. For Katya’s birthday, they took pictures … Continue reading

First day after the summer vacation: Aquarium renewal
In the morning of the first day after the summer vacation, we had presentations of four Ph. D candidates scheduled to be graduated next spring. There were much to say to them, but totally, they were OK. In the evening after coming back home, Katya and I worked together to reset the aquarium. We cleaned up the tank. We are still keeping the fish separately outside of the tank. We will put them back in tomorrow.

Sun Meadows in summer and Busiest Tokube
After breakfast, we went to “Sun Meadows Kiyosato Ski Resort.” In summer, the slope is good for walking. There are two lifts taking us up, too. After the arrival, we first visited a small lake near by. Sometimes, people learn canoeing on the lake, but today there was nobody. Maya-san took a bath in to cool her down. We walked along the side way and went up the slope. Then we walked down and took a lift up again. Maya-san was with Katya on the lift. She was not afraid of the ride. Views of the city down from the hill and up the mountain. … Continue reading

Run for Upgrade!
I woke up 4:30 AM. The bus to Incheon International Airport left the hotel at 5:30 AM. I arrived at the airport at 6:40 AM. I checked in using an automated check-in machine, then I went to Seven-Eleven on the first floor to buy candies to the office workers and my students of the institute. I went through the immigration, and then looked around shops in the airpot to look for souvenirs for Katya. Before the departure, I spent my time in a Sky Team lounge, taking a light breakfast. Then I got on a Delta plane for Honolulu bound for Narita. I took a seat, half asleep. A male … Continue reading

Second day of the conference in Seoul
After lunch, I walked around the conference hall. From 3:30 PM, I gave a 30-min invited talk. I think I did it OK, but there were not so many questions. After the conference, I walked around the COEX mall. I did not buy anything. I will buy souvenirs at the airport tomorrow. Banquet started at 6:30 PM. Since I knew nobody, I picked some foods and went back to the hotel. Tomorrow morning, I am leaving early for Japan.

First day of the conference in Seoul
It was cloudy in the morning. I did not get a good view from the window. River was hardly seen. The conference was held at COEX conference center next to Intercontinental COEX. There was a poster session in the morning. I was asked to evaluate 23 posters in one hour. Hard work! I did my best. After lunch, I went back to my hotel room. The view got better. Then I joined the conference again. Katya wrote me not to eat too much. So I had snacks in the lounge of the hotel. Now I am preparing my presentation tomorrow.

Upgraded Me
In the morning, I was working in my office for the invited talk in a conference held in Seoul from August 16 to 18 At 2:30 PM, I said good bye to Katya and Maya-san, leaving for Narita Airport. I arrived at the airport at 5:30 PM. I was then working in the lounge. When I was about to be on board, I handed my boarding pass to a man. The man scanned it on a machine, and a red light on the machine lit. Did I do something wrong? “Thank you for flying Delta. You are upgraded to the Business Class”. This happened to me for the first time. … Continue reading

Katya is back in Kofu
Katya called me from Narita Airport before 3 PM. She safely arrived back. She said she was going to take a bus to Kofu leaving at 4:20 PM. At 8 PM, Maya-san and I picked up Katya at Kofu Station. Wasn’t Maya-san excited! Katya looked very healthy and stronger than when she had left Kofu in the mid of the heat. Oh, I was glad to see her smile. It was a short trip but it was worth for her. Katya brought chocolates. Chocolates in Russia is delicate and good. Katya also brought a bottle of kvass. I had kvass when I first visited her in Vladivostok. The taste reminded … Continue reading

Monday in Summer Vacation
It is Monday today. There is no meeting at all; I checked e-mails, wrote syllabi for the lectures, and sent on the web the scores of the students taking my classes. I went to see a nose doctor, and had my hair cut at a barber’s. In the evening, Katya and I talked on skype. Katya said that her parents gave many souvenirs to Japan. She will be coming back to Japan tomorrow from Vladivostok.

Second day of the summer vacation
In the morning, I took Maya-san to Arakawa River Park. The lawn was faded by the heat. Maya-san walked on grasses. I went to Gusto for breakfast. I read two newspapers. When I turned on TV, Sharapova was with a Japanese comedian, who went to London to interview athletes. The interview was funny. Today’s Sunday, so I spend a lazy life with Maya-san.
