Plans for Golden Week, 2012

This year, the Golden Week starts from April 28 to May 6, excluding May 1 and 2. It is difficult to find rooms in hotels in popular places. This year, we reserved a room in XIV Hatsushima on May 4 and 5. It is a pity the sea is still too cold to dive in. Before going to Hatsushima, I need to work. On April 9, I go to Tokyo, and from 13th to 15th, I will be in China. On the 16th, I go to Kyoto. I have a lot of things to be done before the golden week.

Monday is always busy

E-mails come during the weekend, or people send e-mails that they did not send during the weekend when Monday comes. So Monday morning is not a very pleasant time to open up the mail box. I received abstracts for the meeting in China, and I had to arrange them in order. For my research project, the office asked me to prepare another documents. I need to prepare documents for the graduating students. And so on. I did not come back home for lunch and kept working. I finished lots of the works and happily went left the office.

China plans

I was asked to join a forum in Chengdu, China in April with six other Japanese researchers. Japanese and Chinese scientists will intensively discuss together in a hall for two days. Today, I reserved flights to/from China. I hope that it will be a good chance to get to know new people there.

Chinese professors arrived

Seven professors from Beihang University visited our institute, one of whom used to work together with us. It has been half a year since she left. She received her Ph. D in China, came to Japan with her husband, and had worked in Japan for five years. Now she is an associate professor in the university in Beijing. The Chinese professors had lunch together with us. Three out of seven professors spoke good Japanese, because they used to study and work in Japan. It is not common now to find Chinese professors speaking Japanese, because Chinese students and researchers tend to go study in the US. The Chinese dean told … Continue reading

January 2, 2007 in Sanya, China

We went to the town to rent bicycles. The price was much lower than renting at Holiday Inn.  We rent funny bikes. The downtown is on the beach, and many rivers run through it. We enjoyed riding downtown.  There were many hotels, and good coffee shops and restaurants were easy to find in them. We stayed in town till it got dark. This was the last evening in Sanya for two of us. We went out on the beach to have a bottle of wine with cheese.

New Year’s Day, 2007 in Sanya, China

New Year’s Day was a fine day as usual in China.  We went to the beach in front of Holiday Inn. Everybody must have stayed up late; the beach was empty. We had lunch at the coffee shop by the beach and walked by it. We headed for Nanwan Monkey Island taking a cable car. At the entrance, a big statue of philosopher welcomed us. The island was literally full of monkeys. All the monkeys live outside.  Visitors can freely see them live. It was a paradise for monkeys.  We found a swimming pool for them. After dinner, we rent bicycles at the hotel.  Katya had not been riding it … Continue reading

December 29, 2006 in Sanya, China

Katya and I decided to spend New Year holidays together in 2006.  Katya had traveled around the Hainan island the year before and especially liked Sanya.  I had little idea about China, so I followed her idea. It was a long journey for both of us.  I flew from Tokyo to Shanghai, and to Sanya.  Katya took a bus from Vladivostok to Harbin, took a train to Guanzhou, and flew to Sanya. Sanya is a beach resort, called “Hawaii of China”.  I think it is not such an exaggeration. We met at the airport and moved to the Sanya Huayuan Hot Spring Seaview Resort.  It was a hotel owned by … Continue reading

January 2006, Our Encounter in China

On the way back home from my sabbatical in Illinois to Japan, I dropped by Ghangzhou, China for a visit to a lab and for my rest before going back to work.  I stayed at “Victory Hotel”, where Katya happened to stay.  She was traveling around China to see the country.  She already spoke Chinese, then. On the day of arrival, I met her and invited her to dinner at a restaurant in the hotel.  I remember we had a whole fish.  She was used to eating Chinese food, and we had meals spicy. The following day, we decided to have a one-hour bus trip to Zhongshan city.  This is … Continue reading

Persimmons

While I was at work, Katya went to Shosenkyo again to take pictures.  She showed me some of the pictures (Pics 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) that looked like beautiful abstract art works. In the afternoon, Katya’s Ukrainian friend, Kseniya, living in Higashi Yamanashi city came to our apartment with her Japanese husband.  They have a farm and brought us persimmons.  Katya was teaching when they arrived, and they left a box of them in front of our apartment.  Kseniya called to Katya saying that Maya-san had barked so furiously inside to keep our residence. Their persimmons grew good and large. There were no seeds inside, and the taste … Continue reading
