Seminar and meeting in Tokyo

I continued copying and pasting. At 2 AM, a mail arrived from a Mexican friend working for a French university; he invited me to the defense of his Chinese  PhD student, and the date of defense was decided on September 18th. So I will visit France in September. I finished the report at 4 AM. I uploaded the file to a free storage site and sent the url to the governmental institute asking to download it to check. I came back home, took Maya-san for a morning walk, and left for Tokyo for a seminar of a graphic software I am using. I slept in the train. I got off … Continue reading

Paper to be revised

After the PhD defenses and the following party last evening, I received an e-mail this morning. I had submitted a paper to a scientific journal, one of the coworkers of which is the PhD student. Two reviewers gave us comments in the e-mail. One of them favored our paper very much, who accepted to publish it with no change or modification. The other reviewer was interested in the results, but he proposed a completely difficult interpretation. We know that he is mistaken, so we will slightly modify the manuscript and send them a letter telling our points.

Defenses

Today was for the defenses of PhD students. From 10:30 AM, I attended the defense of a student from Bangladesh. Boy, wasn’t he great! He came all the way to Japan to accomplish marvelous results. He carried out his presentation in Engish. He spoke in a very clear English, and his presentation was perfect, too. Two of the students surely will receive their PhD. There was five PhD  students in all in our institute … Continue reading

Students’ theses

It was a snowy day today. Katya and I might go skiing this weekend. Two of my students are busy preparing for the graduation. A PhD student is getting ready for the final defense of Monday. It will be in English. He wrote papers in English and attended international conferences. He is a smart guy, so he should be OK. A master degree student is less experienced. I have been reading his thesis all day. He wrote a lot (in Japanese), but with less care and consideration. It was not enjoyable hours to correct his manuscript. Anyway, I will hold a party for students including the two. I will be … Continue reading

The last day in France

In the morning, I had the last breakfast in the hotel. I packed up everything and left the hotel. I took the same bus to the university. T This morning, there was a final defense of a PhD student. I joined it and listen to him. Very intelligent he was! At the end of the last two visits to Poitiers, I took early trains to Paris to enjoy a walk. This time, because of this defense, I decided to stay in Poitiers in the morning. The questions and answers started and continued. I sneaked out from the auditorium at 11:30 AM.    A French colleague took me to the station. … Continue reading
