No mails at school
Our mailing system for the teachers and the office workers (only) in the university was somewhat tied up. I worked all day without an e-mail, which was weird; I was nervous whether I miss some important information. I was invited to give a talk for company managers and engineers in Shimosuwa, my hometown. I asked my parents if they wanted to come, but they hesitated. Anyway, I started working on the presentation, which requires no internet connection. It will be a two-hour talk for non-specialists, my first experience in my life.

Upgraded Me
In the morning, I was working in my office for the invited talk in a conference held in Seoul from August 16 to 18 At 2:30 PM, I said good bye to Katya and Maya-san, leaving for Narita Airport. I arrived at the airport at 5:30 PM. I was then working in the lounge. When I was about to be on board, I handed my boarding pass to a man. The man scanned it on a machine, and a red light on the machine lit. Did I do something wrong? “Thank you for flying Delta. You are upgraded to the Business Class”. This happened to me for the first time. … Continue reading

Low frequency electric masseur
On the evening the day before yesterday, I ordered an electric masseur, “OMRON HV-F010” from Rakuten Internet Market, one of the largest internet markets in Japan. It was for my shoulders. The masseur looked very small and the price was fair. At 8:30 PM this evening, it arrived. I put the pads on both of my shoulders and switched it on. Boy it works! I tried a low frequency electric machine for the first time. I did not expect too much of it, but it works. Katya notices my shoulders are moving. I saw myself in the mirror to find my shoulders apparently shaking. It was a good buy. The … Continue reading

Farewell to Chengdu
I woke up at 5 AM, checked e-mails, got packed, and left the hotel by bus at 6:30 AM for the airport with five other Japanese professors. We arrived a little bit early for the check-in time, so we had breakfast at McDonald’s. They sell rice porridge in China, but I had an egg McMuffin, because I wanted to eat something different. At the entrance of the airport, we found a souvenir shop “旅の佳品”, or “Chosen Goods for Travels”, only selling Japanese goods. On the internet, I found that this shop is run by a Japanese company. The plane left the airport at 9 AM. It was a smooth flight. … Continue reading

First day of the forum in SiChuan University
In the morning, I found that I was not able to use the university web-mail system of the university. I tried to make an international call to the internet administration in my university, but had a hard time making an international call from my room because the hotel staffs hardly understood English. After an hour of struggling, I managed to call to the university office to ask about the internet connection. They told me our mailing site might be blocked, and gave me a different address. It worked well. So, I was able to read mails from my colleagues. I stayed in my room, checking mails and working. At 11:45 AM, six … Continue reading

Business trip to Chengdu
In the morning, I attended meetings as usual. I left Kofu for Narita at 12:30 PM and arrived at the airport at 3:30 PM. The ANA plane directly flying to Chengdu, China, was small and filled with travelers, mostly Chinese. A strong wind blew against the plane, and the body much trembled. It was not a pleasant flight, but the service was much better than that of JAL Cabin attendants were kind enough and helpful. The dinner was simple, standard, and acceptable. Four other members joining the forum were on the same plane, which arrived in Chengdu at 11:30 AM. It was rainy. The temperature was close to that in … Continue reading

Real-estate meetings in Tokyo and Tokube dinner
There were two real-estate meetings , for which, I went to rainy Tokyo. The first one, starting from 1 PM, was held in Shinjuku for the management of the apartment in Shibakoen. There were four attendees who are the staffs of the owners’ union, including me. We talked about exchanging light bulbs into LEDs, a bicycle parking, and the modifications of the rules of the owners’ union. It ended at 2:30 PM. I rushed to the next meeting in Honancho for the management of the apartment in Nakaochiai, the representative of the owners’ union of which is me. I talked with a new internet provider for the new service and … Continue reading

Business trip to Tokyo
From 10:30 AM, there was a meeting in Shibuya for the coming governmental funds. I had been asked to join by the governmental office who gives money, so I went there. It was boring, but I found out one thing: the government is trying to focus more and more on the application studies than the fundamental researches. I do not like application researches. In my mind, there is a feeling that application is for money, which should be done by companies. I am a scholar, who seek for the truth. I know I need to carry out both fundamental and application researches to be funded, but I wish I could concentrate … Continue reading

Reducing Internet Costs
I worked at the same conference site in Funabori till 3 PM. Then I visited the management company for the apartment in Nakaochiai, of which I am representative of the owners. We have been paying the internet fees for the tenants each month, which costs 2,625 yen per room. Too expensive! I had called some internet agencies and found cheaper ones. We thus had a meeting in the management company to decide which internet agency to choose. Eventually, we would choose the cheapest one, which costs about 900 yen. Large amount of cost reduction. I was happy about having been chosen representative.
