Working with Shimadzu and Panasonic
From yesterday, I have been working with Shimadzu and Panasonic researchers in my lab. Pretty tiring because I have little time to rest. Shimadzu researchers left this evening, but Panasonic researchers stay until tomorrow. Tomorrow, a professor from Keio University arrives to carry out another experiments. I was pretty exhausted when I arrived home. Katya made a lot of spaghetti, and I finished it all.

Another Monday
I received an e-mail from a person in the governmental office in charge of my project, telling me that they had received my answer sheet. It will be passed to the judges on the 27th. Another e-mail arrived from a friend of mine in France with a paper attached; a Chinese student of his lab did the job in our institute while he was here and wrote the paper. I will check it soon. In the afternoon, I taught a class. Another e-mails and another jobs not accomplished last week. Typical Monday.

Visitors to the institute
Thirty scientists from abroad visited our institute. I helped them with the lab tour. One of them from the Netherlands was very interested in my research, and he will get in touch with me after coming back home. I hope it will be a fruitful collaboration.

Budget inspection inside the university
My 3.5-year project has already passed a year; there are two and a half more years. This afternoon, there was a budget inspection of the university; two officers from the main office came to our institute, and one officer in our institute and I welcomed them in a room. The two officers asked how I am choosing items to buy and how the officers of the institute are ordering them. Then they came to the lab to check what I had bought. It was not a national inspection, but I was a bit worried and relieved when they told me things seemed OK.

Back in the lab
The student who got sick returned to the lab. We will work slowly. A researcher from Shimadzu arrived to work on the instrument of my scientific project. I cooked spaghetti for dinner. Mariya did not cry much during the night time, although Katya had to wake up, anyway.

Going to Shimosuwa for the trip to Toba tomorrow
The researchers from Shimadzu have finished the work for this week. They left the lab at 4 PM. They will come again after two weeks. Katya picked me up at 7:20 PM by Smart. For dinner, she drove with me to a sushi restaurant, Tokube, which was full of people. After dinner, Katya and I came back home, packed the baggage, took Maya-san, and left for my parents’ in Shimosuwa. We will stay one day before going to Toba. Maya-san will be left. It is a pity but she will have some fun, too, with my parents.

Developing an instrument
Three researchers from Shimadzu came to my lab this morning. They had sent all parts in advance, which arrived at the institute at 10 AM. Then the researchers started to build up the parts to make a new instrument we are developing. The development of this instrument is the aim of our governmental project. At noon, the three researchers, two students and I went to Manpuku Roh for lunch. In the afternoon, they kept building the instrument, and I came back to my office. A sophomore student was waiting for me. He was to present his electronic circuit in front of the teachers for the exam, but he had yet … Continue reading

Chinese student works with me
Two lectures on Tuesday as usual. When I was about to leave after the first class, a Malaysian girl student came to ask a question of me. After the explanation, I asked her how much she understands my lecture. “30%”. Gee, I was disappointed! Of course, I expected a little more than that. I hope it should not be because of my English, or, should I wish so? Anyway, I have some more chances of recovery. After the lab tour in the afternoon, the Chinese student liked my research. So he will work with me during his stay. I hope he will enjoy this opportunity more than 30%.

Lecture at the University of Tokyo in Kashiwa
I woke up at 5 AM in the morning. I quickly went to my office to prepare my presentation for today; I was invited to give a lecture at the open house of the University of Tokyo, Kashiwa. I worked till 9:30 AM and came back home. Katya took me to the station for the train leaving at 10:30 AM. In the trains, I was checking my PowerPoint file again and again. After arriving at “Kashiwanoha-campus” Station, I took lunch at McDonald’s in front of the station. Then I took a shuttle to the campus. The place looked a bit lonely, being out of the town. I went into … Continue reading

Katya’s Interest at the moment
I am working on the schedules and budgets and a small piece of paper. At 2 PM, I showed two professors from USA around the lab. From 3 to 5 PM, they had lectures. When I came back home, Katya was with Maya-san and a laptop. She is so interested in tablets. I was surprised because I was thinking Katya is a person who is not attracted to those electronic devices; so was she herself. Today, while she was not working, she went to Yamada electronic shop. She said Apple and Toshiba interest her. I do not think she needs one, but it seems she is having fun (?).
