First day after the summer vacation: Aquarium renewal
In the morning of the first day after the summer vacation, we had presentations of four Ph. D candidates scheduled to be graduated next spring. There were much to say to them, but totally, they were OK. In the evening after coming back home, Katya and I worked together to reset the aquarium. We cleaned up the tank. We are still keeping the fish separately outside of the tank. We will put them back in tomorrow.

First day of the summer vacation
The summer vacation of our institute started today, Saturday, August 11. It ends on Sunday, August 20. Since Katya is not with me, I went to my office for some works. I am leaving for Seoul on August 15, so I need to work for that, too. I still saw some teachers and students working at the institute. I checked e-mails and worked with documents. In the evening, I watched a ladies’ volleyball gave Japan vs. Korea. Japan won and got a bronze. Japan has not got many golds but many medals, so it has been enjoyable watching the Olympic games.

Dinner with Chinese student
The Chinese student is leaving Japan on August 10. He will then go back to China for the summer vacation to see his parents. Today, I invited the Chinese student, the student who instructed him, and a research associate to a dinner. I chose Ohajiki, a chicken-specialized restaurant, because it is one of the best chicken restaurants in Kofu and that the student is a Chinese Muslim. It is decorated in an old Japanese style. Beans and Tofu appetizers. I ordered a bottler of Kofu wine, which was good. Then chickens continued. Very delicate tastes. Dessert was an icecream. We left the restaurant at 9:30 PM. … Continue reading

Summer vacation coming after the exams
In the morning class starting at 9 AM, I gave students the final exam of the lectures before the summer vacation. Actually, I had shown all the questions two weeks before, and the questions I gave today were exactly the same. Besides, I let students bring any material, such as notebooks, textbooks, notes, and even PCs! One out of four students failed. How could it be? I gave those unsuccessful students some more chances to recover their grades. In the afternoon class starting at 1 PM, I have been teaching the basic of electronic circuits to freshmen . Today, they presented what they had learned in front of the teachers. One student … Continue reading

Katya’s return schedules
Vladivostok Air withdrew from Japan at the end of March, and Aeroflot took its part. However, Aeroflot did not succeed the route from Narita to Vladivostok. How is Katya going to be back to Vladivostok? I called to Delta today with a hope to use my miles for Aeroflot flights. They found one route using only 25,000 miles: Narita – Moscow – Vladivostok! Unfortunately, the flight is too long for Katya, who has only a two-week break. Korean Air is a choice. But she needs to stay one night in Seoul. Besides, seats are already limited by the Japanese visitors to Korea during the summer vacation. Also, they will not … Continue reading
