Graduation season

Students are getting ready for the graduation. A master degree student is busy with his thesis. He modified an apparatus himself for new experiments. He has gotten good results, which will be published in a paper. A bachelor course student is working hard for his last experiments. He is very smart. He has decided to go for his master’s and carry out experiments with me. I hope he will keep studying and try to accomplish his doctor’s, too. In the afternoon, juniors came to our institute to start carrying out their preliminary experiments. They will join the group from April. It is the time for the regeneration.

Students’ theses

It was a snowy day today. Katya and I might go skiing this weekend. Two of my students are busy preparing for the graduation. A PhD student is getting ready for the final defense of Monday. It will be in English. He wrote papers in English and attended international conferences. He is a smart guy, so he should be OK. A master degree student is less experienced. I have been reading his thesis all day. He wrote a lot (in Japanese), but with less care and consideration. It was not enjoyable hours to correct his manuscript. Anyway, I will hold a party for students including the two. I will be … Continue reading

School year is ending

Two of my students are writing their theses.  I am helping them these days. There was a meeting in the institute this afternoon, where professors reported their activities of the academic year 2011. A new teacher coming from April was decided at the meeting, too. I am thinking how to use up the money till the end of March. I have decided a farewell party for my students on March 1. Tomorrow, there will be the first part of the entrance exams to the national universities. The academic year is ending.

My PhD student did OK.  He finished with his thesis.  He is still carrying out his experiments for his last paper.  Katya and I will hold a farewell party for him. Master students and senior students do their graduation presentations, too, and we will help them. I am organizing a meeting in a conference with six Chinese and six Japanese.  One Japanese participant has not been decided and I have been sending e-mails and calling one by one. My ex-boss got a big prize in another scientific society, and I will try to … Continue reading

Busy Winter Days

I have almost done with my student’s thesis.  That makes me feel a bit relieved. It has not snowed yet, but Kofu is cold now.  These are pictures taken in a garden in front of my office. I am using Gateway and Katya, HP now, because Katya’s dictionary does not work well on Gateway.  She now only uses Gateway for Skype. Oh, I am a little sleepy.
